Commissioned for Merton College Choir, Libera Nos is a setting of the sixth Psalm Antiphon at Matins on Trinity Sunday. Drawing inspiration from the repeated supplications of the text, the music opens with veiled, plaintive harmonic figures, swelling in and out, imploring the trinity to ‘free us, save us, defend us.’ Feathery, dissonant soprano lines coalesce before returning to the cloud-like chords of the opening, building to a climactic statement of ‘O Beata Trinitas.’
